Your best friend hits the gym religiously every weekday morning at 6am on the dot. She swears it’s the best way to start the day and loves every minute of it. Inspired by her enthusiasm, you make a resolution to get active and hit the gym too. On your first day, nervous and half awake you struggle not to look too out of place while looking for the treadmill “on” button. After two mornings, you’re still not entirely sure how to stop the treadmill without just jumping off. Inevitably, when your alarm goes off the next morning you opt to hit the snooze button instead of trying your luck with the elliptical.
If going to the gym doesn’t leave you feeling motivated, that type of workout may not suit you. The good news is, there are several other creative ways to stay active.
What are you trying to accomplish physically?
Ask yourself what your goals are in getting active. Do you want to be healthier? Do you want to lose weight? Are you cross training for another sport? Do you want to get stronger? These questions will help guide you towards the type of activity you need and tell you how often you need to do it.
Do you have any social needs?
If the idea of hitting the gym solo doesn’t excite you, then maybe you need to be in a more social setting. If that’s the case, consider joining an instructional class or an organized sports team instead.
Things to try
- Start with a few trial yoga or pilates classes
- Join a learn to run group
- Sign up for a local sports team
- Start a walking group at the office or in your neighbourhood
- Ride your bike to work
- Buy a pedometer, count your steps and try to challenge yourself to walk more each day
- Try out a boxing or martial arts class
- Take dance lessons
- Find a local pool and try swimming or walking laps
- Rent a racquet ball or squash court with a friend
At the end of the day, the best way to ensure success with your fitness goals is to find something you enjoy. If you’re not into the gym, that’s ok. There are lots of other things to choose from.
